It started, as a lot of these things do, with a silly comment. A throwaway remark, the kind that's gone from your head a moment after you've said it. But the reaction wasn't what Ciara expected.
What followed was the part that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't been there. The slow exclusion. The quiet shift in the group chat. The friends who used to save her a seat suddenly looking elsewhere. There wasn't one big confrontation, just a gradual, deliberate coldness that made school feel like somewhere she didn't belong anymore.
"I'd spend my breaks in the library, or sometimes in the school toilets. I just didn't know where else to go."
Ciara did what she'd been told to do. She spoke to her teachers. They listened, and they cared, but the situation was already complicated, and there wasn't a clear process for what came next. Friendship fallouts don't really fit into a behaviour policy. There's no detention for icing someone out. No lesson plan for repairing trust.
So Ciara did something braver. She started a lunchtime club on Mondays, a quiet, welcoming space where any pupil who didn't have somewhere to sit could come, eat their lunch, and not have to pretend they were fine. It was small. It mattered. And it helped other people in exactly the way she'd needed help herself.
But she always felt that something was missing. A simple, safe mediation process - run carefully, with no one taking sides, could have helped her and the other girl talk. Not necessarily to be best friends again, but to remove the barrier. To say the things that were too hard to say in person. To find a way back to ordinary.
That idea became FixMyFallout.
